Chapter THIRTY-THREE

Sunday, 11:00 am

My cell rang as Eddy retreated into the station. I checked the caller ID. The James residence. Oh boy.

I inhaled and let it out slow. “Hello, Brooke.”

“Can you talk?”

“For a minute. We’re getting ready to leave. Eddy just stepped back inside.”

“He’s working today?”

“Long and hard, Brooke. We need to find this missing kid, so I’m going to run him ragged. See if I can milk his guilt.”

“You said something about going to see your doctor?”

“You mean Evelyn Nagle? My shrink.”

It took her a moment to find her voice. “Uh-huh…”

“I’m probably stickin’ my foot in it but, you don’t sound too sure.”

“I don’t think I have a choice Tony. I can’t keep it up much longer. The stress is, like, getting to me. I know what Eddy does is his problem, and I’ve got to live with it! I don’t know how much longer… If I don’t get some help pretty soon I won’t slit my wrists, I’ll just use Eddy’s gun.” The silence that followed seemed as loud as an explosion.

Lost for words I finally said. “You still there?”

It took her a moment to reply. “Uh-huh.”

“I’ll talk to Dr. Nagle for you. See how soon she can see you. She’ll give you a call to set up an appointment. Are you okay for right now?”

“I’ll try not to do anything dumb.”

I felt a trickle of sweat rolled down my side. “Promise?”

“Promise. Just don’t let Eddy, like, come home tonight. If he tries, let me know so I can go to a motel. If I don’t, I’m afraid of what I’ll do.”

The car was starting to cook inside from solar heat. I started the engine and turned on the A/C. “I’ll make sure you don’t have to see him. That I can do for you, Brooke.”

“Thanks Tony. You’re a true friend.”

I wanted to tell her that’s what friends did, but the line died. I sat in the car, cell phone in my hand, wondering if I was being disloyal to my partner.
